Screwtape Letters
Worship and the Word of God

Read Matthew 13:1-9

In this section of Scripture Jesus talks about four different hearers of God's Word, or four different ways to hear God's Word.  How are you susceptible to any or all of these four ways?

Read Exodus 20:8-11

What is the focus of the Sabbath command?

Read Matthew 12:1-14

How have the Pharisees misunderstood the Sabbath?

The tradition of gathering each Sabbath to read the Scriptures and receive a teaching from the rabbis started during the exile in Babylon, about 600 years before Jesus.

Read I Corinthians 16:1-2

What has changed about how the early Christians celebrated the Sabbath together?

Read Acts 20:6-11

Again we see a similar pattern, gathering on the 1st day of the week.  Why this change?

What lessons can we learn from how Eutychus listened to Paul's message that day? J

Read Exodus 20:12

Martin Luther applies this commandment to all those in authority over us, whether in the family, church or government.

Read I Timothy 5:17-20

NOTE that the New Testament uses three words "elder" "shepherd/pastor" "bishop" interchangeably to refer to those holding the pastoral office.

What are some of Paul's teachings here about Pastors and the Church?

Summary question:  How can you better "remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy"?  Better grow in God's word?  Better honor those in authority over you, especially those who bring you God's precious word?
